After a cold winter and an extremely wet spring, I am ready for some hot, dry, weather! Of course I would prefer a cool ocean breeze occasionally but I have accepted the fact that I will have to travel for that. Already, the house is decked out in the coastal style I love so much. And despite my neighbor’s mystified shaking of their heads, I will have a coastal front porch as well!
What State Are We In?
Every year when I pull out my sailboat wind spinner, I can almost hear them asking “ Does she not know she’s in Colorado?” I do but as my front porch sign states “The beach is just a state of mind.”
In this house, we live for our trips to the ocean. Having kept a boat out in Newport Beach for years, being out on the water has always felt like home to us.
We sold the boat years ago when the kids started college, but we intend to replace it on retirement someday. Until that time, we will surround ourselves with the things that remind us of why we work so hard.
Nautical Welcome
Friends who come to our house do not look twice at the large “Ahoy” sign on my porch. Most had visited us over the years on the boat and consider this decor just who we are. It’s our goal to create the laid back attitude that we learned from our years on the water in our home. Other than the formal living room (which I have no idea why we have one,) there is nothing formal about us or our home.
Front Porch Wreath
I change so many of the wreaths I make every other week it seems but this one has remained the same for years now. Someday I will tire of it but not today!
Peaceful Sounds
Of course I love my signs but my favorite thing on my coastal front porch is my pelican fountain. First of all, it’s a pelican so there’s that. But if I can’t hear the ocean waves, at least I can hear the sounds of water from our room above. It’s such a peaceful sound!
Blue is My Color
For the moment, I am keeping my blue hydrangea potted on the porch. I’ve set them in my old antique metal basket as it offers support for the blooms. I will plant them in the yard eventually but for now, I love the burst of blue right here.
Candlelight on the Porch
Another favorite out front is my largest lantern to date. I absolutely love it and with its nautical bow, it brings so much to the overall look. Not to mention how pretty it is at dusk when the candle comes on. It’s always such a warm and welcoming sight coming up the walkway.
Swinging into Summer
Needless to say, the porch swing has seen better days. It will need to be replaced at some point but until we firm up our plans, I will let it be. I know wherever and whenever we move, there will not be room for a swing. So for now, I will live with the faded fabric and swing happily on warm, summer nights.
A Little Bit of the Tropical Vibe
Although the front yard has trees and bushes galore, I always add one or two plants to bring a little bit of a tropical vibe as well. By the end of the season, my coastal front porch will look like a jungle!
This Little Light of Mine
To bring even more of a nautical feel, I brought up my old lighthouse from the back patio as well. It is such a pretty sight in the daylight hours and absolutely gorgeous at dusk.
Speaking of Sunsets…
My favorite time to sit on the front porch is late in the afternoon. The house faces west so it is the perfect spot to view our gorgeous Colorado sunsets. This one is just beginning.
We always tend to linger a bit longer when the candles and solar lights kick on.
My coastal front porch is everything I had hoped for and I have no doubt… we will see many beautiful sunsets this summer from this very spot!
