Decorating with Fall Neutrals

I love the colors of fall. The oranges, yellows, and reds add so much pop to any room. But if you prefer a more understated look, decorating with fall neutrals is the way to go. Brown, beige, gray, muted golds, and white can welcome fall just as easily as the brighter traditional colors. It’s all in the way you display them.

During the weeks of renovation on my main floor, I was anxiously awaiting the time when I could begin my fall decorating. With sanding, staining and painting going on, it was impossible to find a place to start. But the urge became too much and I decided to work on the lower level first. Being the creature of habit I am, it was very hard to shift gears for a different starting point.

The downstairs is always the last place I decorate in the fall. It is my overflow space. If the truth be known…I have done a terrible job of weeding out fall at the end of the season. I don’t seem to have that problem the rest of the year. But since I love autumn, I can’t seem to curb the tendency to bring in more by adding to rather than replacing. As a consequence, the lower level holds the excess in the fall.

Coastal Fall Decor

Even though we are landlocked here in Colorado, part of our hearts remain on the west coast. Mostly because our Katie is there but also because we have such a great love for the ocean.

Since I love a seasonal home, the main floor always changes. But the downstairs remains coastal all year long. It has to! Otherwise, where in the world would we put Flipper??? However, I do try to add a bit of the seasons there as well.

In keeping with the coastal theme, I tend to use a lot of blues, whites, and mellow green in this part of the house. But the neutral fall colors play a big part as well. I feel the brown and white branches are the perfect compliment to the blue, green, and white pumpkins on this table. I created the printable art to mesh as well.

While I have very little orange, yellow, and red in this room, I felt like a bit of burgundy and purple would enhance the look. As always, my talented sister-in-law helped me there with her incredible painting. Thank you Diana!

This is another of her paintings that I couldn’t bear to put away for the season. She gave it to me in the form of a homemade birthday card which I promptly framed and it is a favorite of everyone who visits. The centerpiece is the only spot downstairs where I felt traditional fall colors would work.

The windowsill with it’s bronzed sculpture seemed to be another place where a little added color was needed. I accomplished that I think with a burgundy pick and candle ring.

The granite bar has enough pop on its own but a few neutral pumpkins didn’t hurt the overall look.

Side note: while browsing through my Pinterest feed, I came across this pretty neutral display by Michelle at The Painted Hinge. So simple but absolutely gorgeous! Her blog is full of great ideas and tutorials for farmhouse decor. Stop by and say hello!

Sprucing Up The Guest Room For Fall

With social distancing in place in most states, we have had a very quiet year as far as visitors go. My downstairs guest room has been lonely all summer long. Finally though, with the numbers stabilizing and improved testing, we will be welcoming our first house guests in the next week. Friends from Arizona will be making the trip up to see the aspens turn for fall. I’m so excited and I want to make sure they feel the season right here in my home.

I bought the pumpkins awhile back for a fall display in a home with blue decor. I absolutely love them in this room. And it seemed the perfect place for my favorite Emily Bronte quote.

Last but certainly not least, the mantle. Here I decided to blend a little bit of coastal, neutral, and traditional decor. The original swag was at one time, the very essence of traditional. Adding the whites and browns have toned it down just the right amount. I added the navy blue pumpkins for a bit of pop and as a way to bring the whole room together.
