From Drab to Fab: Kitchen Refresh for the Spring Season

Spring has finally sprung and it’s time to usher in the season with a brand new look. Say goodbye to the muted tones of winter and embrace the vibrant colors of springtime. Today I’m sharing a few ideas to help you with that very thing!

For the first time in what seems like forever, I will be decorating a new kitchen for the seasons ahead. That realization is a little bit daunting, a little exciting, and yes, a little bit sad.

Normally, I can’t wait to get started, but this time I was at a loss. I loved my kitchen! It was my favorite room. How would I ever duplicate what I spent years creating in a new place? This kitchen is half the size of my old one. It’s long and narrow instead of the perfect square that I’m used to. And… there is a cactus outside my window where my beautiful maple used to be!!!

It took me awhile but I finally realized, it really wasn’t the room that I missed at all. It was the memories we created there. The kids at the kitchen table doing homework, everyone gathered around a glowing birthday cake on the island. My giggling children and grinning husband with the hose in hand, spraying water everywhere through the open window… ok that one took me a minute to appreciate!

 Footnote:
A stock pot filled with freezing cold water poured from that same open window, screen removed, makes quite the impression on the unsuspecting hiding just beneath it! (Mama always has the last word.)

My point is, once I realized the problem at hand, I was able to put on my big girl pants and solve it. This kitchen has no memories… yet. So I set out to make a lovely space where we will create some new ones. How did I do???

Fresh Herbs Anyone?

I’ve always loved the winter decor I would put in my kitchen after Christmas each year. Snowy branches, warm plaid accents, glittering little snowmen, I loved them all. But once spring fever hit, usually mid-February, I couldn’t get it down fast enough. It felt so drab to me, almost depressing at that point. I was longing for the color of green inside and out! To that end, I would be at the nursery the minute they brought in the year’s first herbs.

I love fresh herbs in the kitchen! It took me years to find the right spot for them to thrive in my old kitchen. I imagine it will be the same here. But for the moment, they brighten my mornings right where they are. Not to mention the scents!

Table Dressings

Topiaries always bring a touch of spring to any room. I’ve used quite a few in my decor over the years. Placed in a basket, they make a great centerpiece. Coupled with a vintage style rabbit, it’s the perfect spot to sit and plan the day each morning.

Just a Touch Here and There

While the downsize has made life simpler in a lot of ways, it’s also presented a few problems. Finding space for everything has not been easy. However, on the bright side, it has forced me to be a little more organized. As a result, I’ve also found ways to make the problem of storage just a little bit prettier.

Counter/cabinet space is at a premium. Since I hate having loaves of bread sitting out, I used a favorite basket to store them. Without the bar downstairs, storing wine glasses and such became a kitchen thing as well. They do look pretty in the glass front cabinet though!

The ice maker also was a casualty of no longer having a bar in the house. (Yes, my fridge makes ice, both cubes and crushed but it’s just not the same!) Since it’s one of my very favorite things, I have gladly given it a prominent spot on the counter!

To bring this counter into the season, I added a green striped fabric napkin to the basket, and a pretty dishtowel. A green plant brightens things up and the rooster… well… because, ROOSTERS!

Speaking of Roosters…

Since roosters are thought to bring good luck and I’ve been sadly deficient in that area of late, I thought I better have two! The tiered tray provided a nice little perch for this one! The bunnies have plenty to eat here and they seem quite happy as well!

Coffee? But Of Course!

When we started getting rid of three floors of furniture last year, I knew there would be zero chance my coffee bar would be left behind. It’s a little too wide for the only spot I could find but I’m making it work nonetheless.

I knew I would desperately need a sense of the familiar in my home. This is it for me! Although I’m forever changing it, it has been a constant for years and years. Stopping here each morning, makes it feel a little more like home every single day.

So many shades of green seem to scream “HELLO SPRING!”

Could I Be a Closet Minimalist???

Don’t be ridiculous! However, with the absence of an island for meal prep, I keep the other counter pretty clear.

I do love a lamp in the kitchen though and of course a candle to make it cozier still!

With a smaller kitchen, the dogs have lost their private dining nook as well. However, they each have a corner to call their own and that seems to be just fine with them.

When all is said and done, I think I’m going to like my sunny little kitchen just fine!
