Today I’m sharing an easy DIY faux Valentine cookie decoration just in time for the holiday. Such a fun little project for a cold winter’s day!
It’s cold outside today so we threw a pot roast in the crock pot and I’m staying in. Which means… I need a project! More specifically, I need a project that doesn’t require me to leave the house!
Last year, I was on a mission to consolidate my many craft supplies into one container. I was determined not to buy another thing until I used most of what I had on hand. While going through my inventory I found a cute unfinished wooden heart and pulled it out in anticipation of Valentine’s Day. It is absolutely perfect for today’s project!
If you follow the blog you might have seen the Faux Hot Chocolate Cups I made for my Christmas cocoa bar. They were quite easy to make and looked adorable there. I decided to use the same process to make a faux Valentine cookie with my wooden heart.
At the time, I wasn’t sure how much spackling paste I would need so I ordered a large container and smaller one and I’m so glad I did. The heart and the spackling are the bulk of the supplies I’ll need. I found a pretty pink acrylic paint among my craft stock too so I’m pretty much ready to get started!
In case your craft bin doesn’t have exactly what you need, I’ve added some links below the supply list.

Supplies
- unfinished 8 inch wooden heart
- small container of lightweight spackling paste
- pink or red acrylic paint
- disposable knife
- disposable container
- disposable pastry bag
Directions
Step 1
Add a cup of spackling to a disposable container.
Step 2
Add 3 or 4 drops of acrylic paint to the container and mix thoroughly. Too much paint will keep the spackling from drying properly. I chose a deep magenta color for that reason. Although it lightens considerably when added to the compound, a few drops produced a pretty color without changing the consistency.
Step 3
Using a throw away knife or a suitable paint spreading tool, apply the spackling to the heart. Frost the heart just as you would frost an actual cookie. A very thin layer works best and drys completely in a few hours.
Step 4
When the heart is dry to the touch, fill your pastry bag with the remaining white spackle in the container and pipe on edging. I used a wavy tip but a star or a half moon will work just as well.
Step 5
With the remaining spackling, pipe on your valentine message and allow to dry completely for 2 to 4 hours.

So now that you have a giant Valentine cookie, where should you put it??? Well, just about anywhere I think! Being that it is a cookie though, I think a spot in the kitchen is called for.
It looked very cute on the counter with a pink candle, red roses, and hearts.
I liked it as a Valentine’s Day Centerpiece on my table for two.
But… I loved it as a part of my holiday coffee bar!
I think hanging it on the wall is the best place for me. While the spackling is quite hardy, it wouldn’t hold up if it is moved too often. I’m forever changing things on the counters and tables. However, the coffee bar will remain as it is until February 15th.
Well that was a fun way to spend a cold and snowy winter’s day! The actual time spent putting the cookie together was less than 15 minutes. Of course, with drying times included, I managed to kill the afternoon. Time for a cozy fire and some pot roast!
