How to: Light a Path Through the Fall Season

With the days getting shorter and a definite chill in the air, it’s time to warm things up a bit for the new season. Light can create a warmth that is felt deep inside. Today I’m sharing a few ways to light a path through the fall season and bring that warmth to your home as well.

Although I’ve always welcomed the changes that autumn brings, I’ve never been crazy about the shorter days that come with it. Soon it will be dark at 5:00pm and I’ll need to fight the urge to go to bed for the evening! To compensate, I tend to add a light source to every nook and cranny and I’m quite particular about what that will be.

I detest overhead lights. I will use them only to light a path to an alternate source. Although canned lighting can be pretty, it is not my first choice either. This time of year, I am drawn to a warmer look. Let me show you what I mean…

The Warmth of a Candle

From the start of fall through the winter months, candles are everywhere in our home. These days, I’m drawn to the battery operated version. They are so realistic and with the timer option, I can set them and forget them. Coming home at night with candles already aglow provides such a warm welcome!

In addition, they will light up areas that are not easily reached. I use the space above the kitchen cabinets a lot during the fall and Christmas seasons. Candles operated by a remote work perfectly there. I use color changing candles so I can switch them to red for holidays. I’ve linked my favorites below.

The mantel space above the fireplace is the main focal point in the family room. I try to make sure it’s the prettiest place in the house and the candles here are set to turn on at dusk each night.

In addition, battery operated candles are perfect for a lantern or two as well.

I’ve purchased several battery operated candles that are waterproof. They pack such a punch in the outdoor lanterns.

While these candles are great for the convenience and safety aspect, I do use a few real ones for the scent and the added ambiance.

I still love the old jar candle shades and I use quite a few this time of year. My favorite candles to burn in the fall are Voluspa Baltic Amber or Pumpkin Spiced Latte. They are made with coconut wax so a little cleaner than most but I’m also crazy about the jars themselves. They are so easy to clean out for a quick upcycle!

I do like the glow of a real pillar and I will use them occasionally in a pretty holder.

Of course, they are always a must when guests are coming for dinner! Making sure they are clean burning and a smokeless type is important to me and I’m quite picky about brands. The link below will take you to my top choice.

Mini Lights Make a Pretty Picture

Mini lights are another favorite way to light a path through the fall season. Controlled by a timer as well, they are an easy way to create a warm welcome. They brought my favorite lantern design to life.

Strung across my staircase garland, they give it an amazing upgrade!

Seasonal Accent Lamps

This house is full of canned lighting but I still prefer my lamps. It took me until they finally made a decent warm white led to give up the old bulbs that used way too much electricity. In addition to the ambiance, I also love the ability to bring a few into the season.

So far, I have stopped myself from buying the cute rooster, Christmas tree, or corn stalk shaped lamp. Adding a bow or a band around a shade is often enough for me. However, the ball jar lamps I’ve had for years are so much fun.

I made this lamp from a kit I bought long ago. In recent weeks it held mini lemons for the summertime. Now it’s just adorable filled with candy corn and really brightens up the coffee bar for the season!

I’ve added a second lamp to the kitchen counter. A simple fall pick and a cute little sign and it fits the season perfectly!

Light adds a whole new dimension to everything it touches. I hope you’re inspired to look around your home and see where you could incorporate a light source into your designs!

    1. Thank you Marie! I love that I don’t have to worry when I leave that I left a candle burning. My memory is not what it used to be for sure!

  2. LOVE these new designs and subjects, like the crows, (one of my favorite animals!). And, I especially love it that you put links in to purchase as I see a couple of things I may have to have. 😊

  3. I love candles, real and battery powered, and have both in my home. However, I did not know you could get them with a timer. That’s a big plus!! Candles and the mini string lights just add something special to a home. Thanks so much for linking up at the Unlimited Link Party 84. Shared.
