Nature’s Palette: Welcoming the Season with Branches, Blooms, and Autumn Leaves

Autumn is the time when Mother Nature throws vanity to the wind and flaunts her true beauty for all to see. Decorating for the fall season requires the rest of us to shamelessly bear the title of “copycat.” So today, let’s give her a run for her money, shall we?

Although it is a lofty goal, we all strive to bring the outdoor splendor of autumn inside for the season. The colors of the trees, meadows, and fading flowers are the inspiration for our efforts. So box up your summer decor and grab your virtual paintbrush! Your canvas awaits!

Leafy Touches for Fall

As essential as the branches and blooms are to our designs, it’s the leaves that pack the most punch!

There was a time when the leaves for fall decorating came straight from my backyard. Since that’s no longer an option, I think I’ve found some great substitutes. The beauty is really only 10% in the element and 90% in the way it’s displayed.

I decided early on to incorporate a touch of green in my fall decor this year. It brings to mind that time of year when the trees are just beginning to change. Therefore, I’ve added some faded green leaves to most of my arrangements.

An amber vase paired with a remote-controlled candle assures that this display is equally captivating both day and night.

Eucalyptus stems are beautiful all year long but especially so in the fall. I’ve kept the green in place and added a few orange and brown stems to bring the season into focus.

These leafy stems are gorgeous in whatever vase, basket, or pitcher you choose!

Since the kitchen has an abundance of white, I chose a mix of deep red and dark brown leaves for contrast here.

The vibrant orange leaf stems below have always been a part of my autumn decor. I purchased them years ago from a small craft store that has since closed its doors. I did just see some while shopping for the eucalyptus which I’ve linked below. They look so pretty inside a copper pitcher!

This year, due to lack of counter space, they have been relegated to the cabinet top. I just couldn’t bring myself to leave them in a box all season!

Colorful leaves can be used to enhance almost any autumn display at a minimal cost. (If you don’t have a bin, a box, or at the very least, a ziploc full of autumn leaves… we can’t be friends! We just can’t! ) I will be using them to bring dimension to several trays around the house.

Branch Out with Your Autumn Decor

If you’re lucky enough to live in a place where bittersweet grows wild and berry brambles abound… lucky you! You can simply go outdoors and gather to your hearts content. Sadly, I do not so I tend to spend a great deal of time online. I’ve also gotten quite a bit of exercise in with daily visits to the gym (Hobby Lobby) this time of year!

Branches adorned with fall colors add that “wow” factor to any room. In fact, depending on the space… sometimes you might just need the whole tree!

That being said, the bare branches in the yard from the latest bought of wind can have a place too.

Those otherwise useless twigs make the perfect filler when mixed in with berries, leaves, and blooms.

Speaking of blooms…

Cozy Things Up With Fall’s Finest

Autumn Flowers are some of the prettiest the year has to offer. Whether faux or real, they are a great addition to any display. I, for one can never wait for the brightly colored mums to show up everywhere! Those faded blooms from a summer garden can work wonders as well.

Although I adore a fresh bouquet for the table, I am a big fan of faux flowers this time of year. I want to be outdoors enjoying the season so I tend to choose no fuss designs in my fall decor. Maintaining fresh flowers takes a bit of that precious time away from the things I love most.

These days, faux flowers have become so realistic! Fall flowers are known more for their color than their scents, so you’re really not missing out on anything going faux.

Putting together a large floral display for any season can be quite expensive. Here’s just a few tips that can help keep the cost down.

  • 1. Choose a high quality bouquet with different types of flowers in the colors you favor. These are the flowers that you’ll showcase on the outer edges of your display.
  • 2. Shop craft store sales, garage sales, and the Dollar Store for coordinating blooms. (Thrift shops are a great place to find donated floral displays that can be taken apart and recycled.)
  • 3. Larger blooms will give a fuller look and serve to draw the eye away from the less expensive filler stems.
  • 4. Take advantage of the bounty Mother Nature gives us right outside our doors. Berry Brambles, pine cones, wheat, bittersweet, and cattails are some of my favorites.

As the season unfolds, let the vibrant hues of fall botanicals transform your space. With every carefully chosen branch, bloom, or colorful leaf, the beauty of autumn takes hold!
