Signs of the Season, Christmas Edition

Those of you who follow the blog know I have a thing for signs.  You also know my loving husband’s take on that (see: Signs of the Season – Autumn).  Despite the constant comments from him, I went about the task of putting up my Christmas signs and writing my Signs of the Season, Christmas Edition post.

Outdoor Signs

We will start with the outside where there are several. He accepts the welcome sign without much fanfare. Doesn’t have a problem with Merry Christmas either. He has, however, questioned why it’s important that our guests learn the names of Santa’s reindeer before entering our home though.

The sheer size of the believe sign has also brought several “helpful” suggestions over the years. Like… “Maybe we need to move that a little closer to the walkway so it can be seen better.” – or – “Isn’t that a little too demanding? I think we should give people a choice!”

Surprisingly, the one he seems to have the most problem with is the smallest one of all. I saw this tiny North pole sign while walking through Target last year and thought it would be cute on the lamp post. He, however, feels it’s extremely misleading.  His comment was that although it might feel like the North Pole with all the decorations inside, it is not.  After thanking him for clearing that up for me… I left it exactly where it is.

Kitchen Signs

There are several in the kitchen that he also finds misleading.  For instance this one…

“Where are the fresh gingerbread cookies?”, he asked.  Followed by… “When was the last time you made gingerbread cookies?” and  “Have you ever actually made gingerbread cookies???”

My framed hot chocolate recipe also makes him laugh.  He thinks it’s extremely funny that it hangs right above the Keurig.  Granted, I am more likely to pop in a pod of hot chocolate than actually use that recipe but… it’s cute!  The whole hot chocolate bar is funny to him.  “How many signs do you need for our friends to understand there is hot chocolate here? It’s a good thing you put that little sign on the sprinkles. Take the mystery out of it!”

There are several small signs throughout the kitchen that I love.  He hasn’t really mentioned them so I’m assuming they have gone unnoticed as of yet.

This one did not escape the scrutiny!

“What exactly are Snowfriends?”  Valid question, for which I really don’t have an answer.

This one simply brought a sarcastic “cute play on words” comment.

“Why not just play the song?”

Again with the song thing!

Wreaths, Pillows, and Teapots!

He also finds the sign on my wreath to be a bit insulting to our visitors.

My teapot, which I think is absolutely adorable, had him squinting elaborately.  I was waiting for the obvious “why is there postcard writing on a teapot?,” but it never came.  Apparently he felt his over- the -top squinting said it all.

He has made his thinking on pillows clear in the past.  I don’t even try to explain why a pillow that also looks like a postcard is cute.  Or better still, one that simply says “merry. “

The only sign here that didn’t bring an eye roll was this one because he agrees with it wholeheartedly!

Update

I have one more sign that I need to share.  I did not order it nor did I hang it.  Yep…you got it.  He did!  — Christmas at the Tylers. Of course, my first reaction was shock.  I mean… he actually went online and made the decision to order a personalized sign,  paid for said sign, then went so far as to hang it himself.  He ordered a sign!  Then of course I was elated.  My mind was racing.  After all the ribbing I’d taken over the years.  Here was my payback opportunity hanging right in front of me!

My first statement was… “I better go shopping!   I guess it’s not apparent yet that it’s Christmas in this house!”   Eye roll!  But I could see a slight shiver on that one.  Mentioning the S word always sends a chill down his spine.

Feeling encouraged, I continued “Am I to understand that we are now allowing strangers into the house?” I proceeded to recite the Stranger Danger speech that we always gave the kids word-for-word. No reaction. Just a puzzled look.

“I mean… shouldn’t the person looking at this sign already know they are at the Tyler’s???” He simply smiled and said, ” Well they would have until you hung the North Pole sign out front. Now they are confused. But no worries… I fixed it!” I just can’t win!

While I am accepting defeat, maybe not gracefully, but accepting nonetheless, I will take solace in the fact that in the end…it will cost him! That sign is a little too — a little too — plain for this house, don’t you think? No worries…I fixed it!
