Signs of the season – Autumn

Temperatures are headed down this weekend in Colorado. Snow is in the forecast and my favorite maple is now standing bare in a sea of leaves covering the still green grass. Mother Nature’s signs of the season!

This led me to think about the many conversations that I’ve had over the years with my husband on this very topic…signs. Those who follow my blog know that my many signs around the house are a point of contention with him.

Probably the one he finds to be the most ridiculous is this one.

He simply cannot fathom why in the world I would need a sign that says kitchen! He is sure the refrigerator is a dead giveaway as to the room we are in. Honestly, that sign is a bit outdated and I should probably take it down but I won’t. It makes me laugh every time he notices it and shakes his head.

The look on his face when I asked him to hang this one was priceless!

He suggested at that point it might just be easier to hand our befuddled guests a map at the door! I knew he would absolutely love that one. That might have been part of the incentive to buy it in the first place!

Love Me, Love My Signs

Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely adore him and there is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about how lucky I am to have him in my life. But believe me…the teasing is not at all one sided in this house.

My height or lack thereof is a constant source of amusement for him. He always tells me I need to stand by the clown for a height check when we are going in somewhere. A reference to our many trips to Disneyland where there may or may not have been some question whether I was tall enough to ride a roller coaster there! The fact that I am almost exactly a year older than him gets a lot of mileage too. Bottom line…my signs are going nowhere!

1940’s Ball Katie, Larry, and me. It’s the hat that makes him so much taller than me!

Outdoor Signs

But seriously…I really do just love signs! They have always been a big part of my decor. Signs of the season are everywhere in my home. I thought it might be fun to take you on a tour of the many that are here for the fall season.

Starting outside…a welcome sign is always a must. At the moment it is my dachshund chalk board that welcomes guests to my home. I really needed this one because my little Cooper refuses to stand out in the cold to welcome guests in person! He definitely prefers to stay right where he is.

No need to even get into what my other half thinks of the giant fall sign out front!

Never Enough Welcomes

Right inside the entry, there is another welcome sign. You know…in case someone has forgotten who they came to visit!

…or this one. It not only offers a welcome to our guests but also reminds them of the season. They could have missed the FALL sign outside right???

Signs of the Season in the Heart of the Home

My kitchen wreath is one of my favorite fall decorations. So pretty by itself but I added a blessed tag for good measure. It’s the first thing I see everyday when I’m making morning cup of coffee. The season itself prompts one to reflect on what’s really important in life. But this little added push ensures that I start my day thinking about the many blessings in my life.

Other signs of the season in my kitchen remind me of family outings in the past. Trips to the pumpkin patch, the corn maze, all the things we always looked forward to this time of year.

Still others are simply there because, well, just because they are so pretty!

Seasonal Sayings, Seasonal Quotes

My family room is full of signs of the season as well. Some I’ve created, printed, and framed with my favorite seasonal sayings and quotes.

Others caught my eye in one store or another and found their way into my cart. It’s funny how that happens!

I love making signs a part of my lanterns too!

Still others are in the form of pillows, pumpkins, or jars. (You can find the quick little tutorial for the blessings jar here.)

I love my fall signs. Some remind me of how grateful, thankful, and blessed I am. Others bring up wonderful memories from autumns past. And still others are simply just signs of the season.

In just a short time I will be putting these signs away. They will be replaced with ones that make me think of Peace, Love, and Joy instead! I am ready! I normally fight the urge to move on from fall each year because I love it so much. This year, I am just ready! With everything going on right now I think we all need the peace, love, and joy that the Christmas season brings.

    1. Thank you Debra! I so appreciate that! It’s amazing how much mileage they get out of the “short” thing, isn’t it? My mother always told me when people made short jokes I should simply say “nice things come in small packages.” She meant well!
