Timeless Elegance: Creating a Traditional Christmas Tablescape

Even though the big Christmas Eve gathering I was hoping for will not be taking place this year, I wanted to share my favorite tablescape with you today! I’ve seen so many beautiful ones while scrolling through Pinterest but for me, a traditional Christmas table is what I love the most!

Place Settings

Since the overall theme in my dining room is red and gold, I chose to keep that going on the table as well. Alternating the chargers between red and gold with each setting– (some day I am going to shock all of you with a completely uniform table!).

The dishes were a gift from my in-laws to my husband many, many years ago. Very old but pretty nonetheless. I absolutely loved that he had them to begin with, so I have used them consistently.

My green water goblets are perfect for this table and offer a bit of contrast. I added some small white lanterns to alternating place settings for the contrast as well.

My gold cutlery and the holders I made a few years ago are perfect to add a little more sparkle to each setting. I fell in love with the little Christmas stockings that I had seen at Pottery Barn. The problem was the price tag, four stockings for $42.00! I needed 12 and I could not justify spending that in my own mind. So I found these mittens in the newborn section of Walmart, 2 pair for 98¢. A package of gold glitter snowflakes and bows for $1.29 at Hobby Lobby and I’m happy!

In keeping with the red and gold theme, I used my red knit napkins and my gold deer rings. The elegant gold deer is perfect for a traditional Christmas tablescape!

The Centerpiece

During normal years, I would have used fresh greens for my centerpiece. Since we are staying home these days, I found an old centerpiece in a bin downstairs and dressed it up with a red candle holder and my gold mercury glass tree.

Above the Centerpiece, the chandelier wreath I made earlier in the season really sparkles in the candlelight.

The old teddy bear soldiers have been on my Christmas table every year for as long as I can remember. I absolutely love them and I find comfort in the continuity. This year I added some wooden rocking horse ornaments I found at my favorite holiday store.

The Side Table

Since I want to allow as much space on the table as possible , I am using the side table to hold the coffee cups and saucers that would be used with dessert.

As the light outside my window begins to fade, the warm glow inside becomes more profound with each passing moment.

Christmas Eve Wishes

I am hoping this is the last socially distanced table I will ever set. Next year, I pray I will be squeezing in extra chairs!

I will be setting this table again on Christmas Eve, four settings instead of six– but Christmas Eve is my favorite night of the year so a pretty table will still be in order. It will be so different from years past, but I know the peace and joy of that special night will be right here in my dining room!
