Transitioning From Christmas To Winter

With the holidays behind us now, my thoughts have turned to creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere to see us through the Colorado winter. Transitioning from Christmas to winter is really not as tough as you think.

If you are like me, the scope of your Christmas decorating is quite large. Of course there will be several bins to pack away. While getting rid of the reds and golds that have permeated your home for the month of December is essential, there is still a place for those evergreen garlands and silver accents that had faded into the background.

Stop! Don’t pack that away yet!

When decorating for the winter months, keep in mind that so many elements you’ll need were most likely a part of your Christmas decor. So take a long look around before you take everything down. Chances are a lot of it can stay for a few more months by simply removing that bright red bow!

Christmas Trees = Winter Decorations

For me, the Christmas trees throughout the house are a big part of my winter decor. I’m not ready to get rid of the lights that provided such a warm glow either. So while I will remove and pack the ornaments away, the trees will be around until March when they are replaced by bunnies!

The trees offer a bonus too. Clean up at the end of the season is a breeze! I arrange them in a bin according to size. No bubble wrap, no newspaper, nothing breakable, easy peasy! So keeping them out for another season just makes sense. They add so much to the winter decor and nothing to dread about the clean up! You will find those trees on my mantle, in my hutch, and above my cabinets. They add the color that my neutral winter decor is lacking.

Although not always green, fabric trees are a great addition as well.

Evergreen Picks

Greenery is so important when transitioning from Christmas to winter. It’s true… holly and berries have no place once the holidays are over. However, pine, cedar, and magnolia leaves are perfect! Filling a vase or a basket with a combination of these make a beautiful display.

Ornaments

There are also several ornaments that I hold out for winter decorating. They can be used in tiered trays, in lanterns, or just in a pretty bowl throughout the winter season.

Winter Art

I love a pretty winter scene and my favorite is the focal point on my mantle for the season.

But winter art doesn’t have to be about a canvas. Displaying a pretty serving dish or a plate can be art as well!

Candles

As with any season, candles add so much! I find them absolutely essential this time of year. When it’s cold and gray outside, a glowing candle is such a welcoming sight. I find myself using my battery operated ones more and more these days. Partly for the convenience of a timer, but also because I can forget all about them without any consequences!

Transitioning from Christmas to Winter on a Budget

Bringing the winter season into your home doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are just a few ways to welcome winter without spending a dime.

Natural elements

Pine cones are a great way to bring the winter season inside your home. They can be found almost anywhere. A walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or simply a stroll in your own back yard. Add them to a vase or a basket and you’re all set!

Printables

Printables are always a great way to bring a little bit of any new season in to your home. I’ve added several to the Printable Library to help with that.
