Here we are… celebrating another new year. I have to keep reminding myself that while the calendar will change, not much else will. At least not right away. However, just knowing that sometime this year, we will return to some semblance of normal makes me so excited! Meanwhile… it is time to welcome winter and start a new year in My Home of All Seasons!
I have a love/hate relationship with winter in Colorado. I love the snow right up through New Year’s Day. Subsequently once the holidays are over, I’m ready for spring. If I could find a place in the world where winter lasted just a month, I’d be packing my bags! But over the last few years, I’ve learned to consider the winter months as a time to regroup, reflect, and make plans for the year ahead. As always, I will start with my home.
Using Neutral Colors to Welcome Winter
The problem for me in the past is that I tried to take my house from the glory of Christmas straight into the spring season. That just didn’t work! Here in Colorado, we had months of winter to go. The pretty flowers and pastel colors that are a part of any spring decor seemed completely out of place in the brown, barren landscape outside my door.
Those who make their homes in warmer places have a different outlook than those of us who live where the snow is still falling well into April. Here, the flowers are far from blooming and the colors we see on any outing are simply shades of white, brown, and gray. The contrast when stepping outside of my spring home was depressing to say the least. Therefore, I chose not to go there anymore and embrace the winter months instead.
Those colors that seemed so stark are warm and comforting when brought inside with a beautiful fire and evergreen boughs still gracing the bannister. An outing into the cold is not so shocking or bleak when you know you are returning to your warm and cozy home.
Using Textures to Welcome Winter
The key to winter decorating is in the warmth of the colors and the coziness brought in with the fabrics of the season as well. Soft wool blankets and faux fur throws go a long way towards providing a cozy atmosphere.
Flannel, corduroy , and velvet accents welcome winter in with style.
Welcoming Winter With Natural Elements
To finish things off, you will need to bring in the elements of the season. Through the green of the trees, garland, and evergreen picks, you will add a new dimension and pull everything together for a wonderful wintery room!

I completely agree. I’m in Texas so we transition into “spring like” weather throughout winter but it cant look too springy yet. I’d love a little snow now and then.
