5 Easy Ways to Maximize Your Fall Focal Point

Every room has one… that one thing that draws your eye the minute you enter that space. My advice? Run with it! Today I’m sharing 5 easy ways to maximize your fall focal point and showcase your own unique style.

If you are a home decor junkie like me, decorating for the fall season is always a favorite. Summer is over and with school starting, cooler temps, and the holidays on the horizon, we’ll all be spending more time inside. If a warm and inviting atmosphere is your ultimate goal, creating a fall focal point in every room is essential.

Sometimes the focal point of a room is something that was decided at the same time your home was built. A strategically placed window with an amazing view for instance. An accent wall painted or textured long ago. Even a built in art niche. Since these are all things that can’t easily be changed, you can do the next best thing. Through trial and error and a little imagination, you can maximize the impact and make it your own.

1. Create a Focal Point Within a Focal Point

Big bright windows might be the focal point of your room. You just can’t help but look that way. However, placing a vase of fall branches on a table or a window sill makes it so much more interesting. Creating a focal point within a focal point is the ultimate accomplishment.

Today I’m concentrating on the room we use most often in my home, the family room. This house was built at a time when adding insets here and there was all the rage. While I would have preferred a flush fireplace with a pretty wood mantel, this house wasn’t on my radar when decisions like that were being made.

That being said, the large recessed space above the fireplace gives me a lot of room to get creative. It is the focal point for both the family room and the kitchen so I’ve learned to make the most of it.

I have several canvas prints and a few framed pieces that have worked great in this spot in the past. However, this year I wanted a change and it arrived today.

This gorgeous fall sign came from a wonderful Etsy shop called Mulberry Market Designs. They have several beautiful signs to choose from and they were amazing to work with. The link above will get you there if you’d like one of your own.

This is my focal point within my focal point and I absolutely love it!

2. Front and Center

To maximize your fall focal point you’ll want to make sure it’s front and center. Whether a painting, a wreath, or a sign, that coveted spot will demand attention. However, in a large space such as mine, it’s equally as important to throw in a compliment or two!

3. A Compliment Goes a Long Way

Adding a few elements that compliment your focal point can go a long way in maximizing its impact on a room. Choosing colors that blend in rather than distract is the goal.

I chose matching black vases to coordinate with the frame. White pampas grass and cream colored velvet pumpkins help call attention to the writing. Stems in muted shades of brown and copper work well with the background of the sign itself. A burnt orange sunflower was added to each vase for a surprising burst of color.

4. Right Where I Belong

The focal point you placed front and center and showered with compliments is now the “Top Dog” in the room so to speak. However, everyone wants to fit in! It’s important to make sure that although it holds center stage, it also becomes a part of the overall picture.

I use a lot of buffalo checked accents in my home. So, when adding more elements, I wanted to make sure they tied in to the rest of the room. A pretty swag beneath the picture was used to make the connection.

The swag itself has sunflowers that are similar to those in the vases. The buffalo checked pumpkins help to bring the rest of the room into focus.

5. Illuminate It!

You knew it was coming. You knew I would play that broken record and say as I always do… Light it up! I know, I know, but it’s true. Light adds a whole new dimension to any display. I started with a small string of battery operated mini lights added to the swag. I nixed that idea because I felt it took something away from the sign. Obviously, that is not the goal at all!

In the end, I settled on a few battery operated candles placed in a staggered pattern on each side. Simple orange candles were exactly what was needed to maximize this fall focal point perfectly. In keeping with the buffalo checked theme, I added a black and white leaf to the larger candles as well. Boom!

The End Result

What matters is that the end result is exactly what you’d hoped for. That the focal point you created invokes the warmth and coziness of your autumn home. All that’s left to do is the light the fireplace, sit back, and enjoy the season!
