With spring on the way, I’m focused on using one of my favorite decorating tools to help me usher in the season. Designing a pretty spring lantern is a great way to give your home a refreshing springtime vibe!
The first question I always ask myself before making a home decor purchase is “Can it change with the seasons?” The answer when it comes to lanterns is a resounding YES! I consider them essential to decorating my home all year long. With their versatility, they can go from season to season with little to no cost. Once you’ve made the initial purchase, they become the gift that just keeps giving!

Adding the Elements of Spring to Your Design
Your lantern is a blank canvas. You can paint a pretty spring masterpiece with very little effort. The only limitations are the size of the lantern and the depth of your imagination. Literally anything that reminds you of the season can be used here. Flowers, potted plants, or a little bit of moss will bring the green of spring inside. Bunnies and birds’ nests or a few little eggs will give it life.
Greenery and Floral Designs
Adding spring greenery is always a great place to start. It automatically brings a springtime feel to any project. If the lantern is small, a little potted plant may be all that you need. In larger lanterns adding a faux stem or some moss to highlight other elements is perfect. Fashioning a swag for the top of a narrow lantern is yet another way to add the must have greenery.
Although quite tall, this lantern is very narrow. Adding a single stem of flowers, two candles and a small nest is enough. I added a faux baby tear spray to the top as well.
Use a Decoration and Make it Better
With a wider lantern, you can take a decoration that you might have displayed on its own and build a scene around it.
This lantern was the perfect size for a pretty spring house I purchased several years ago. Adding a faux spring branch and a few small bunnies and this 5 minute creation is a favorite already!
I would love to live in this little house, wouldn’t you???
Say Something!
I love adding pretty bows to all my lantern designs. With a springtime pattern, stripe, or check, they can represent the season before you even see what’s inside.
The bow is also the perfect place to make a statement. Adding a small sign packs such a punch. This lantern is now a reminder that “The Best Memories are Made at Home!”
A pretty birdhouse and some cute little bunnies sitting on the mossy mounds completes this design.
Bring on the Bunnies!
Nothing says spring like a cute little bunny or two! This medium sized lantern is great for this cute little lady. A few small green picks and a pink candle and that’s enough for this one!
Using smaller elements, you can create a scene in almost any size lantern. This lantern is only 10 inches tall. I added a green ticking fabric to the bottom in place of any faux greenery. A small bunny and a bird’s nest along with a wooden egg and this one is ready for the season!
Light It Up
Ok… yes, I say that way too often but it totally applies here! With a lantern, of course the first thing that springs to mind is light. To me, that’s always a must. So to finish things off and make your design one for the books, light it up!
The little house in this lantern is made of cardboard. It has been a part of my spring mantel for years. I always found it sad that it didn’t light up yet I never thought to remedy that until now. Making a small cutout in the back of the house and inserting a battery operated tea light was a quick fix. So pretty!
A small strand of fairy lights is perfect for almost any design. You can wind them around a plant, a bunny, almost anything to give your lantern an extra “wow” factor.
Candles set to come on at dusk are a nice addition as well.
