A Walk around Coronado Island

Among the things that scare me, at the top of my list are bridges. I’ve always hated them and it seems to get worse the older I get. However, I refuse to let that fear keep me from the places I want to go. This morning I wanted more than anything to take a walk around Coronado.

The bridge didn’t look quite so intimidating from my hotel room but I knew the closer I got, the worse it would be. The marine layer hadn’t burned off yet so it seemed more foreboding than normal. I could have avoided the bridge altogether. There is another way to get there. But as bridges go, this one is definitely not as scary as some of the others I’ve been on, so I closed my eyes and let my hubby drive me there. It was so worth it!

We normally spend a lot of time in California. Several trips during the year to see Katie, spend some time at the beach, or go boating. One of my favorite annual trips here is in the month of December. We love spending time at the Hotel Del Coronado when it’s all decked out for the Christmas season. It’s pretty all year long, but with evergreen boughs gracing the bannisters, and a gorgeous Christmas tree in the lobby, it’s just become a tradition for us. Watching ice skaters with the beach right behind them, is so much fun. These pictures were from Christmas two years ago.

Since I know we will not be back this year, I just felt the need to spend some time there anyways. Walking the quaint little streets makes me happy. I could learn to love that bridge I think if I could just make one of these gorgeous homes my own!

So many of the houses have big wrap around porches. They just look so inviting. White picket fences and manicured lawns, they are the very essence of home.

This little stone church is so gorgeous!

With the naval base here, the island certainly shows its patriotism. Almost every house I walk by has a flag.

Every house is different and the architecture varies so much from one to the other. Some look like they belong in Mayberry. Others seem like they belong in Key West. And some just make you feel as if you took a step back in time. They are all just beautiful.

As I walked, I wondered about the people who live in the houses. I wondered what inspired the HOPE letters on the second story of one. Did they grow up here? Were they stationed at the base? I had so many questions!

We did not visit the hotel this time. Just a long walk around the surrounding neighborhoods, lunch, and a quick stop at the beach. Was it worth the trip across the bridge? I decided…YES.. it was!
