Fall is in the air! Its official arrival is still weeks away but there are subtle changes happening just outside the door right now. Let’s take a queue from Mother Nature and fall into Fall with a natural look!
In the past, I’ve always jumped into the fall season with the gusto of a child presented with a leaf pile. However, this year, I can’t seem to find the old enthusiasm that normally hits me right about now. This year, I’m just not ready to see the summer fade away.
Part of the problem for me is that our plans for a trip to the coast fell through yet again. Now postponed until late September/early October, I feel as though I’ve completely missed the summer. Because of that, I am having trouble letting go of the old season and embracing the new one.
I know I’lll get there. When the first red leaf flutters down from the old maple out back, I’ll get excited. Sitting outside on the patio with my morning coffee on a crisp autumn morning will bring me such joy. Once I can shut down the air conditioner and replace it with open windows, I’ll be all in!
In the meantime though, I thought a few little touches here and there would help me ease into the coming season. I’m letting Mother Nature lead the way!
Natural Fall Elements
Long before the leaves burst into color, autumn comes to the meadows surrounding my neighborhood. It’s a subtle change in the hues of the shrubs and grasses. Subtle, and an early preview of what’s to come.
The autumn saying “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers” is very true for me. The explosion of color is something I anxiously await each year. But September is gorgeous in its own right. Not as flashy by any means, but there is something special about the transition from one season to the next both indoors and out.
Today I am concentrating on the formal Living Room. The room itself is in front of the house. It is completely separate from the open Kitchen and Family Room set up and quite a bit smaller. Although seldom used, it is a quiet and peaceful refuge in a sometimes very busy household.
A Little Bit of Wheat
With a color scheme of rich browns and deep greens, natural fall accents are exactly what’s needed here. One of the prettiest is a simple bundle of wheat and there are so many easy ways to incorporate it into your decor. I chose to fill a simple white pitcher with several stalks for a corner table.
Fashioning a sheaf of wheat tied with a pretty fall bow is another way to go. It was a beautiful addition to last year’s Thanksgiving table and I’ve shared the process in the post, Four Easy Thanksgiving Centerpieces.
Early Autumn Leaves
When we think of fall, we think of the splendid color show that Mother Nature is gearing up to share with us. At the moment though, the leaves have simply changed from a deep, dark, green to a lighter shade of the same color. Although it’s gradual enough to miss, I find it so pretty. I added some faux leaves to an amber vase that I think captures that change quite well.
Pumpkins, Pumpkins, and More Pumpkins!
Ok! So when I say natural, I’m referring to the colors of nature. I have never seen brown velvet pumpkins at any patch I’ve visited either. I am, however, of the opinion though that there should be. They are just so pretty!
Together with a wooden gather sign and the wheat, the pumpkins pull it all together.
I have never met a pumpkin that I didn’t like so I’ve used plenty for the fall makeover in this room. I’ve kept the colors mostly to muted tones but the textures vary greatly. Placed in a favorite wooden bowl, the pumpkins look gorgeous here.
A standing carved wood pumpkin in a lighter grain and a fall lantern I bought years ago complete this table.
Maybe Just a Little Color?
Although the many aspens in my yard have not yet begun to turn gold, I couldn’t resist adding a few pops of the color.
The velvet pillow and ceramic pumpkin bring an unexpected burst of color to the room.
This time of year calls for the warm glow of candle light. A pillar in a gold holder is just perfect I think.
Although not as striking as the gold, this recycled wooden box with its brown, green, and white accents coordinates nicely with the furniture.
Of course, I needed to add a basket with a throw for actual warmth here as well.
In a few more weeks, I’ll be bringing a full array of the traditional fall colors that I love to the rest of the house. However, this room, has done exactly what I’d hoped for. It’s given me just a taste of the coming season and way to fall into Fall with ease.
