Here Comes Autumn Dressed in Blue… Wait! What?

The colors of fall are multifaceted to say the least. Depending on where you live, the weather, and a host of other things, fall looks different to everyone. This year, Autumn appears to be dressed in blue and what a vision she is!

Traditional fall colors have always been a big part of my seasonal decor. I love the vibrant shades of orange and gold. That love is reflected in the decor of the main level of my home. However, color is a personal thing. We all have our favorites and there is no reason yours can’t be a part of your autumn decor.

I remember when red, and green were the only colors used to decorate for the Christmas holidays. Even if your vision was ahead of the times, it took years for our retailers to catch up. Creating pretty trees in teal, rose, navy, or just about any color you can imagine is done quite easily these days.

Likewise, orange and gold no longer dominate the fall season. This year, you will find many homes where autumn is wearing more navy, turquoise, and indigo than any shade of gold. Although the autumn blues first made an appearance awhile ago, they have completely exploded this year!

Yes! Blue Pumpkins are Real!

There are several varieties of blue pumpkins that are quite lovely. Although very common in Australia and New Zealand, they are not seen too often in the States. More of a slate color then a true blue, I have found Jarredale pumpkins sold at a few of the farmers markets around town. Maybe even the occasional Crown Prince or Blue doll as well.

That being said, faux blue pumpkins can be found everywhere. I’ve seen so many beautiful fall displays that incorporate the blues into the design this year. I couldn’t resist adding a few to the coastal decor in the lower level of our home. Take a look at just how pretty autumn is dressed in blue!

My Blue Heaven

Although I used a bit of blue downstairs last year, I wasn’t fully on board… then.

The lower level had always been the spot where seasonal decorations got their last gasp of air so to speak. Things that didn’t make the cut upstairs yet I wasn’t quite ready to part with. It was always fun to use them in a different setting. However, this year, I’ve found myself all in with the color. Especially when it comes to pumpkins!

With the coastal theme already in play, it almost seemed wrong not to carry it over to the seasonal accents.

The deep blue pumpkins just look gorgeous mixed in with natural elements!

Pumpkins of different sizes and textures can be found in almost any shade of blue today. A little bit of blue velvet can dress up even the simplest of baskets for the season.

Fall Floral and Leaf Displays

Blue is one of those standout colors. It tends to draw the eye quite easily. At the same time, it also coordinates very well with so many other colors on the spectrum. Adding a touch of blue to a fall floral or leaf display brings in so much depth and interest.

Simply adding a blue pumpkin pick to this pitcher full of neutral colors really made it pop.

Mixed in with some different shades of the color, they also brought more interest to this pretty market basket

If you have been following the “On a Tray Blog Tours,” I took full advantage of the blues to create last year’s coastal fall tray. I fell in love with some knitted pumpkins that I found at Home Goods and bought several. I’ve put them to good use in this year’s fall decor as well.

Blue Mantel Makeover

Since the lower level is decorated with a coastal flare, I wanted to add a splash of navy there. The mantel was the perfect spot to bring the color in.

I used a swag that I had on hand and mixed in a few navy pumpkins as well.

The blue ceramic pumpkins light up and the mantel looks just as lovely when the sun goes down.

Pillows and Throws

Although I find the pumpkins irresistible, adding a few pillows and throws in shades of blue can be so pretty too!

Mixing and Matching the Blues

The guest room, (which we already refer to as the “blue room), gave me the opportunity to use several shades of the color for a fall refresh there.

Once I embraced the blues, I decided that autumn dressed in blue is really quite lovely. I even added a touch to my outdoor spaces as well. To see more check out my latest post, 5 Easy Tips for an Outdoor Fall Refresh.
