Fall is here and with it comes cooler temperatures. Today I’m sharing just how easy it is to have your fireplace looking brand new for a brand new season. Gas Fireplace Cleanup is so easy to do and so worth the trouble!
First, let me just admit that I am quite the pansy when it comes to being cold. A week into September and the temp this morning was 46 degrees! Of course, the first thing I did when I woke up was head for the fireplace. But… Ugh! Not a pretty sight! White residue from last year makes it so ugly!
My gas fireplaces are always the top priority on my clean up checklist for fall. I tend to use them consistently from fall through the first weeks of spring. As much as I miss the smell of a real fire in my former home, this time of year I’m grateful I’m not dealing with the mess of left over embers. A gas fireplace cleanup is so much easier!

Cleaning Process
Step 1 – Turn off the gas to your fireplace. Normally you’ll find the switch just inside the bottom grate.
Step 2 – While the bottom grate is open, give this area a good dusting. A small hand-held vac or a wet paper towel will work nicely. Do the same to the top. You’ll need to open this grate as well to remove the glass on most fireplaces. ( Yes! That’s dust! Don’t judge me! )
Step 3 – Cover the floor in the space around the fireplace. I recommend using a drop cloth, an old towel, or newspaper. Even though there won’t be any black ash to deal with, it will still be quite dusty.
Step 4 – Remove the front glass panel and lay it gently on your drop cloth. Depending on the age, style, or manufacturer, you might need a screwdriver to accomplish this. The upstairs fireplace in my home will require one.
However, the unit in the lower level is quite a bit newer. I simply need to release the springs on the bottom.
Step 5 – Apply a good portion of the cleaner to the glass. Rub vigorously until the white residue disappears. ( If you haven’t done this in awhile you may need to repeat this process a few times in spots. ) Wipe away with a clean paper towel.
Step 6 – ( Optional ) Add some gas fireplace embers. You certainly don’t need to do this but it really does look pretty! Chances are, they are already there. Still, eventually they need to be replaced in order to keep that realistic look. Now is the perfect time.
Place a few (10 or so) against the grate before you close it up again and relight the pilot.
The embers help to make your gas fire resemble a wood burning version.
Bring on the Cozy…
With the cleaning complete, all that is left to do is to enjoy the coziness of a night by the fire! Keeping up with the maintenance of your gas fireplace is really quite easy. I’m always amazed at how beautiful the end result turns out to be.
From start to finish each fireplace took me less than 15 minutes.
I’ve included a link to both the fireplace glass cleaner and the embers that have been my go to for years now. Both will last for quite awhile and do a fantastic job.
