How to Make Faux Hot Chocolate Cups

A cup of cocoa done right is such a pretty thing. This DIY faux hot chocolate is a perfect decoration for a cocoa bar, tiered tray, or any Christmas kitchen display.

I added hot chocolate to my coffee bar back in October when the Colorado evenings took on a bit of a chill. We all love it and most of the time, we slip a pod in the Keurig and walla! But it’s not just the taste that is so great, it’s the look. Made with all the toppings, a cup of hot chocolate is just a work of art. So why not use it as one?

Faux Hot Chocolate Cups

Creating a faux hot chocolate cup may not be as fun as drinking a real one but on the plus side… zero calories! They make such a cute decoration for the Christmas season too! Incredibly easy to make, they are the perfect craft for a cold winter afternoon.

Supply List

  • Lightweight spackling
  • Coffee mug
  • Piping bag and tips
  • Small piece of cardboard (paper plates are perfect)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun
  • 1 1/2 inch styrofoam balls
  • Striped paper straw
  • Puffy brown fabric paint
  • Small glitter flakes

Directions

Place the open end of the mug on the cardboard and trace as many as you’d like to make.

Cut a styrofoam ball in half and glue it to the center of the cardboard circle.

Cut a straw in half and work it into the styrofoam.

Fill the piping bag with spackling and work it down into the tip.

Pipe the spackling starting on the edge of the cardboard. Work in a circular motion up to the top of the ball much like you would do when frosting a cupcake.

Continue piping until the cardboard and the ball are completely covered.

While the spackling is still wet, put on your toppings. I used glitter for the sprinkles and added it just as I would add sprinkles to whipped cream.

Puffy brown paint worked well for chocolate drizzle and cutting small pieces of the striped straw looked cute as peppermint shavings.

The spackling directions will tell you it dries very quickly. Of course it does on a flat wall! However, since you’ll be piping on layers, I allowed mine to dry for most of the day.

Once it’s dried completely, you can place the cardboard on top of the cup and display it anywhere. At the end of the season, simply place each one in bubble wrap for next year!

They look just adorable on my cocoa bar! Click here to see the completed bar pictures.

    1. Thank you Cindy! We did have a friend’s grandkids over and they did that very thing. Their disappointment only lasted for a minute though because we gave them a real cup and let them go to town with the toppings! Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!
