Transitioning From Autumn to the Christmas Season

Thanksgiving has passed and it’s time to welcome Christmas into our homes. Transitioning from Autumn to the Christmas Season is as easy as can be with a few simple steps.

While I absolutely love the months of autumn, I am always so excited to decorate the house for the holidays. I’ll be the first to admit, I go a little overboard when it comes to Christmas. But the truth is, there’s really no need. With just a few simple steps, your autumn home can be ready for Christmas.

I know there will come a day when I feel like less is more. When I no longer want to deal with boxes and bins. That day has not arrived in my life yet but perhaps it has in yours. I thought this might give you a few ideas to bring a little Christmas into your home without spending days preparing.

Transitioning From Autumn to the Christmas Season in 5 Simple Steps

This year, I decided to enlist the help of our little doxie, Cooper. His job was to try and look cute and cozy as the transition took place. I think he pulled it off, don’t you? Well regardless, he got us through step 1!

1. Bring in the colors of the season

Switching that pretty orange or gold throw to a red or green one will instantly change the feel of the room. Here in Colorado, my throws are not just pretty but necessary. Since I’m cold when it’s 70 degrees, I find I’m constantly reaching for one. But as you can see, I always share!

Changing out seasonal pillows is a great touch as well!

2. A little bit of greenery goes a long way

Out with the leaves and pumpkins, in with the greenery and pine cones! Adding a few pretty picks to a basket or tray goes a long way towards creating a holiday atmosphere.

Adding greenery to any container is enough to bring a Christmas feel to whatever room you’re in.

3. Pick a focal point in each room and showcase a seasonal favorite

While a centerpiece of fall leaves was such a pretty sight last month on the kitchen table, a small Christmas tree is the perfect substitute for the Christmas season.

4. Add a seasonal scent to your home

Creating a seasonal feel in your home is not just a visual thing. Burning a Christmas Cookie candle has one thinking of the season the minute they step through the door.

Diffusing a Christmas essential oil blend has the same affect and I’ve got some great Christmas blends you can use!

5. Update an everyday, always there element, with a seasonal touch

This wreath was originally bought for a spring accent on the entryway mirror. With very little fuss, it moves from season to season.

My Kitchen Aid Mixer is always a constant on my kitchen counter. Although I don’t use it every day, it is easier to leave it there then move it every time. Once the Christmas cookies are made and delivered to neighbors and friends, it will sit idle until Christmas dinner. Well… not in this house!

  1. I absolutely love these simple tips you’ve shared to move from autumn to the Christmas and winter season. I’ve reached the point in life, like you stated above, where less is more. For the first time, I’m not putting up the huge tree and have decided to have several simple, small trees! Anyway, thanks for your wonderful blog and always sharing thoughts and images with us! Have a blessed season!

    1. Thanks so much Lori! Using small trees will be perfect! I put up all of ours this year including the big real one in the family room but I’m guessing it will be the last time. Our son was here to help or we wouldn’t have been able to manage it. We are hoping to downsize possibly in 2022 so I will be downsizing the trees too! Thank you again and have a wonderful Christmas season!

  2. I like both the autumn and and Christmas touches! I also like that your decorations seem personal and not cookie cutter.

Your home reflects your personality, and I’m glad to at your decided to share!

    1. Thanks Gail! I wish I had been fast enough with the camera to get the look on Cooper’s face when I switched out the blanket he was sleeping on! He was not at all excited to be put to work. Have a great week!

  3. Denise, I love the transition to Christmas decor! I am happy to be mostly finished with unpacking, so it’s been a joy to switch gears. I always start with textiles, as you’ve done. I am finding in this new house that my hand is lighter, perhaps due to just moving and tired of all that, but I find more little lights and fewer decorations go a long way to still being merry and bright! (as long as batteries are in good supply!). Season’s greetings to you as we start the holiday weeks!

    1. Thank you Rita! I’m so glad you’re ready to switch gears. I’m anxious to see what you do in your beautiful new home! I put everything up this year as always but I will be doing some serious weeding out at the end of the season. It’s time. I’ve polled the kids to see what they want to keep. We’ve given most of the outdoor decorations to friends. The next step is to decide what I can send away with the least amount of regret! I’m hoping that by this time next year we will have made some serious decisions on a much needed downsize.

I loved seeing the changes you’ve already made to the landscaping and I’m glued to your blog to see what’s next. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful holiday season!

    1. Cooper is going on 12 years old. He spends a lot of time in the winter wrapped in blankets! In the summer though, he can still give the bunnies a run for their money!
