How to Put Together Your Spring Focal Point

In a few short weeks, spring will be in full swing!  With that in mind, I am working towards creating a home that will welcome the new season at every turn. Like most homes, the family room/kitchen area is the main gathering place for everyone. The main focal point for either room is what we consider the mantel since it is the space above the built in fireplace.

While not the traditional large wooden mantel I have longed for, what it lacks in character, it more than makes up for in size.  I have all the space I could ever need to create a spring focal point we will all love. It is my hope that you will find some useful tips for creating your own spring masterpiece!

Start with a Clean Slate

To begin the transformation,  I need to have a clean slate to work with.  After all the whites and browns I loved so much just last month, I am looking forward to adding some spring greenery here. Completely removing everything you see will help you come up with a vision for your new spring focal point.

Make the Most of the Middle

I will start by replacing the center canvas.  I found this one last year on Amazon and I love it’s simplicity.  With the mountains in the background, a birch tree grove is the main focus. Regardless of the amount of space you’re working with, it is always important to start in the center. Building things out from the center, allows you to create a more aesthetically pleasing look overall.

Bringing in the Elements of the Season

Next I’m adding a pretty topiary I found at a thrift shop awhile back.  I’m also adding some faux cherry blossom branches to the opposite side for balance.  I will keep the blossoms that have fallen from the stems as I put together my arrangement right where they are. A much more realistic look I think.

Green is the Color of the Season

Underneath the canvas, I will add a friendly “hello” with some greenery around it.  An old garland that I no longer use is perfect for adding a touch of green. A faux plant or some picks you might have on hand will work just as well. To make it a little more springy, I’ve added a little white stone bird to each side of the sign.

Candles

While I cannot reach the back of this space without a ladder, I love adding candles here for any season.   I have no desire to bring in the ladder to light them so I’ve used my battery operated birch candles instead.  With their realistic flickering flames, it is hard to tell the difference.  The convenience of the timer and remote is enough to keep the perceived “they are not real” attitude at bay.

Make it Personal

As large as this space is, during the winter months I remove our family pictures to make room for all the decorations.  This time of year, I can bring a few of them back in.   Love these kids!!! Adding family photos serves to bring a bit of warmth to any focal point.

Accents

To finish the center space I will add just a few more elements. This little bunny was a gift from a good friend years ago. I look forward to seeing her each spring! Opposite the bunny I have added my Home sign. Not really seasonal but I love it just the same.

The center looks exactly as I had hoped it would. Spring has definitely arrived on the mantel! I’ll add some seasonal accents to the side openings as well to balance things out.

The final touch is a pretty little bunny garland that brightens up the space and really brings a springtime vibe to my focal point.

If you are decorating the pretty wooden mantel of my dreams, the same principles apply. Choose your centerpiece and build your focal point outward from there. Taking balance into consideration, choosing your end items in like sizes will easily accomplish that. Spring greenery is a must along with a seasonal element or two. But to make your focal point your own, it’s the personal additions that brings the most to any display. A favorite gift, a family heirloom, or simply family photos can bring in the warmth you want to convey.

Now that we have our focal point completed , I’ll be adding little touches of spring to the rest of the house. I am planning my Spring Home Tour for the first day of season and I will be adding pictures to the gallery soon.

    1. Thanks Debbie! I love that little cottage too. It was an impulse buy from Micheals at the end of the season sale 2 years ago.

  1. How great that you have tons of space to work with! And you fixed everything up so well, Denise.
The picture from Amazon could be used through summer, if you didn’t want to change it out.
And the bunny garland is so cute. I would love to have one for next year. Did you buy it or was it a diy craft?
Thank you for adding your pretty post to the Friday with Friends link party 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Rachelle! I bought the bunny garland at Home Goods a few years ago. My sister bought a pretty one there this year though. It was bunnies too but they were a very pretty purple. I am loving all the purple this year. The tiered tray you did for Valentine’s Day with the purple was so pretty! Thanks again. Have a wonderful weekend!
