Spring on Demand – Designing a Spring Vignette

We are late bloomers here in Colorado.  Literally.  For that reason , I tend to use a lot of faux flowers in my decor this time of year.  I’m more than ready for spring to arrive but the weather outside screams winter!  To compensate, I will light my favorite spring scented candle ( Flower Shop and you will swear you are inside one! ) and bring out all the pretty faux blossoms and greenery I can find. Spring on demand so to speak!

By the time the flowers outside are actually in full bloom in my mile high city, I have already moved on to my summer decor. So for the moment, I will celebrate the coming spring with a couple of vignettes centered around the faux flowers and greenery that I have accumulated to date.

Tulips and Memories

CREATE THE LOOK

When designing your vignette, you must first decide what you want to accomplish. Is it to tell a story? Is it to showcase treasured collectibles? Maybe it’s simply to bring in the colors of the season. That is the purpose of my first vignette. Although the weather is definitely not cooperating right now, I am so ready for spring!

This tray is very simple but brings such a burst of color to my family room coffee table.  The pretty pink tulips are the very essence of spring.  They also tend to take me back to my childhood.

While I was growing up in Ohio, there was a lady who lived down the street who moved to my neighborhood from the Netherlands. Missing home, she planted the most amazing field of tulips I’d ever seen. Although a bit out of the way on my walk home from school, I made a point of navigating through her field from the first bloom to the last. Such treasured memories for me!

This gray stone bunny fits in perfectly and the potted topiary adds the green I’ve been craving.  To bring a little more spring to the tray, I added a pip berry ring in shades of green and white.

This simple vignette adds so much to my Spring on Demand quest!

Spring Vignette with a Vintage Vibe

CREATE THE LOOK

My second vignette still brings in the season but with more of a vintage vibe. It also tells a little bit of my story.

A brown wooden bunny is the focal point here. He sits atop some old books that belonged to my mother. Since both my parents were avid readers, books have always been a big part of my life. I’ve read most of the ones in their collections and adding them into my decor is so comforting to me.

To add to the vintage feel, this seems like the perfect place for an old bedspring with a pretty little nest. Although the bedspring crafts have been around for years, this is the first one I’ve made. It’s amazing what you can do with a little bit of moss!

I need a few more accents to complete this vignette. A vintage style clock that became so popular in the last few years will fit in nicely. In addition, a rusted tin bunny votive holder is perfect! An Easter tin bucket with a few hydrangea blooms brings in some color.

Spring on Demand is prevelant in our living room today!

The final touch but perhaps the most important one, is the rosary that belonged to my Dad. The spring season is beautiful for much more than the renewal happening outside. Raised in the Catholic faith, Dad’s rosary was used often during the time leading up to Easter. I also remember him patiently explaining to me several times why giving up broccoli for Lent just wasn’t going to cut it!

Adding his rosary and the books my mother loved makes me remember who I am and where I’ve come from. This vignette is not as colorful as the first but it my favorite!

Faux or Real, Does it Matter?

My husband is not one to give me flowers on special occasions.  He puts a great deal of thought into the gifts he gives me for Valentine’s Day, my birthday or our anniversary.  But he is very much the one who walks in on an insignificant Tuesday with arms full of bouquets just to make me smile.

Knowing how much I dislike the long stretch after Christmas and before spring really takes hold,  he surprises me quite often with pretty spring arrangements.  There is nothing that brightens up a gloomy day like a beautiful bunch of flowers. Today was one of those days! Enough to fill two vases!

That being said, the faux tulips on my table lift my spirits too! They are not meant to be a substitute for the real thing. They are simply a reminder that spring is on it’s way!

Of all the spring flowers that fill the air with fragrance, my favorite has always been the lilacs that will bloom in early May here.  The bushes in the back yard were planted the year we moved in and are quite large now.

As I sit here today with two feet of snow outside my door,  I am happy.  I know it won’t be long until I will be filling every vase and basket with these beautiful stems!

In the meantime, I will enjoy my faux flowers and all they represent. Sunny days are ahead and life is good! Be sure to check out my latest post, Decorating a Ladder for Spring for an additional look at some fun spring decor.

  1. I have used several faux flowers, and seem to be accumulating just a few for each season. I love using flowers in seasons expected, and you’re right, not always available in the stores when we want them. Today’s faux florals can be very realistic looking, as your tulips do! Lilacs are beautiful too, although their fragrance is just a wee bit heady for me. My mother loved lilacs, so they always remind me of her.

    1. They certainly have come a long way with faux flowers. At first glance, it’s hard to tell the difference with a lot of them. Lilacs remind me of my mother too. They were her favorite so maybe that is part of my love for them. She had white ones in her wedding bouquet but told me never to do that. She said they were way too fragile for that and by the end of the day they looked awful. They were married in May and the florist had to force the blooms that year so that was a big part of it too. Lucky for me though, they are impossible to kill so I have quite a few bushes outside. I do not have your talent in that department. I loved spending time looking at your gardens on your blog. So beautiful! Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend ahead!

  2. Looks really nice! You asked does faux or real matter? I don’t think so. I do much better with faux and it lasts longer 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up with me at the Unlimited Monthly Link Party 22. Pinned!

  3. Lovely vignettes. Faux flowers make no matter. It’s great when we do have fresh flowers, however using faux is just as lovely. I am happy to share your sweet vignettes on Sunday at Love Your Creativity. Happy spring.

    1. Thanks so much Elizabeth! I would love to see some actual green outside. It is snowing right outside right now. I really shouldn’t complain though. We really had a mild winter up until now. Have a great week and thanks again for stopping by!

  5. I use a lot of faux flowers inside because I do no have a lot of windows so there is not a lot of light and live flowers and plants die quickly…..everything is so pretty and very Spring-like!!
    Hugs,
    Deb

    1. Thank you! Live flowers and plants will not do well inside here either until it warms up a bit. I saw 70’s in next weeks forecast so I am so excited! Have a great weekend!
